Jon Box's .NET Blog: ASP.NET Membership Provider and Different Servers

I'm working on an application where I built a custom membership provider because of custom database scheme requirement. My custom membership provider is using the hashed format for passwords and user answers. I've got that working and now want to deploy the new application including the new provider. Due to the encryption in ASP.NET being based on the MachineKey and wanting to share the data in development and early testing (ie. different web servers), I needed a MachineKey at the application level.

Jon Box's .NET Blog: "VS2005: Designer or Markup View"

Back in November when Jerry Dixon was presenting the VS2005 launch at the Memphis .NET User Group meeting, I gave him a hard time publicly at one point for doing most of the demo's from in the Markup View. I thought that this was not very informative to those not familiar with the new features. This is also contributed to by my preference in VS2003 to living in the Designer.

Jon Box's .NET Blog - Who Says Microsoft Does Not Listen?

On the Mobility front, I noticed where Redmond decided to add .NETCF 2.0 and SQL Mobile support to Widwos CE 4.2. This was is in response to customer feedback and specifically one of the MVP mobility discussion lists where we are allowed to interact directly with Microsoft Mobility team members. I saw the process in action where some Windows Mobile guys explained why they took the position to not support this, listened to the reasoning from some wise MVP's, went back to their teams, and came back with a change in direction.

Tablet-Enable Your Windows Application Without Changing the Code

Today, millions of Windows applications exist around the world. They are written with various development tools, with different development languages, and are based on different libraries. Let's suppose that you are responsible for one of these - and then along comes the Tablet PC.
Introducing Our Special Mobility Issue

People ask me all the time 'Why do you play with these toys?' - and yes, there is the aspect of an addiction to gadgetry. Tablet PC, Pocket PC, My SPOT watch - I call this my device trio because I personally carry all three and they are cool! But I also carry them for reasons other than just liking gadgets.

Book Review: The Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services

Recently, one of our clients asked me to build some reports into an ASP.NET application that used SQL Server. I had no experience with report generators, but I did have some experience in building reports programmatically and did not want to get on the bad side of my client by billing a bunch of hours towards a report that is not flexible and does not do a lot of things that a reporting application should do.

Mobility Focus Issue: What Is Mobility?

In his book Building Solutions with the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework, Dan Fox begins with a brief discussion of the etymology of 'mobility.' Coming from the Latin word mobilitatem, Dan explains that mobility is the capacity for motion. When I'm talking to user groups, I like to mention these facts so that I can sound intelligent. But, when I talk to customers and specifically decision makers, the talk is about the value of mobility.
